Welcome to Mill Stream Holiday Cottage

Mill Stream Cottage is tucked off the main road down a quiet private lane with designated parking for one car and is within very easy walking distance of the town centre that offers an excellent range of shops, restaurants, sandwich bars, and coffee shops, a small quayside theatre and swimming pool/leisure centre and not forgetting Stoke By Nayland Golf Club which is only a fifteen minute drive away.

Situated near to the Essex/Suffolk border in the historic Market Town of Sudbury, birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, but also within easy reach of Long Melford, Lavenham, and Bury St. Edmunds, or cross over into Constable Country to Dedham, and Flatford.

There is a shuttle train from Sudbury through to Colchester which also connects to London Liverpool Street Station. This is about a ten minute walk away from the cottage, if you want to leave your car behind.

Things to do:

Bring your cycles with you as the opportunity to explore the Suffolk countryside is provided by the many off road routes on the door step, including The South Suffolk Cycle Route (maps are provided), and for walkers there is The Valley Walk which used to form part of the railway route which ran to Cambridge, or other walks to explore which take you on to the footpaths of The Common Lands

Sudbury : Visit Gainsborough House in Gainsborough Street – five minutes walk away. From Easter to the beginning of November, take a River Boat Tour from TheGranary by The Quay Theatre a gentle trip on the River Stour. For the more energetic you could book a canoe trip with River Stour Boating from May to September. This is a guided one day or two day trip from Sudbury following the River Stour down to Cattawade. Click here to “What’s On” in Suffolk.

Long Melford: Excellent pubs, restaurants, and tea rooms are an off road walk away from the cottage. There are many antique emporiums to rummage round or visit Melford Hall, or Kentwell Hall where during the summer there are re-creations of everyday life in Tudor times.

Clare and Cavendish are two lovely villages to visit perhaps on the slow route to Cambridge where you can feast your eyes on gorgeous architecture, easily find somewhere for lunch, including Carluccio’s and Jamie Oliver’s Italian, then an open top bus ride and finally punting on the River Cam. A full day.

Lavenham for an ancient treat. Take a guided walk from the Tourist Information Centre or stroll round this medieval wool town to view the expansive Guildhall and impressive church. The Swan Hotel for afternoon tea, or The Great House for a special occasion – wise to book for this though.

Castle Hedingham just over the border in Essex. Visit Hedingham Castle and The Colne Valley Railway. Colchester will give you the opportunity to try the Heritage Trail which starts at Colchester Castle the largest Norman castle in Europe.

Bury St. Edmunds to visit the lovely Abbey Gardens next to the Cathedral and Ickworth House and gardens an amazing stunning architectural oddity. West Stow an Anglo Saxon village is also worth visiting just out side Bury St Edmunds. Visit www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk for further details and download a visitors guide.

Finally : A visit to the coast is a must. Aldeburgh via Snape Maltings, Southwold or the Essex coast to Frinton, and Walton or one of our favourites Brightlingsea for the best bacon and egg rolls in the area from Bateman's Tower Café.
